Kyoto, a city in Japan renowned for its stunning temples and traditional beauty, has many famous landmarks that draw visitors from around the world. While temples like Kinkaku-ji (the Golden Pavilion) and Fushimi Inari-taisha are well-known, Kyoto also boasts a collection of lesser-known temples that offer their own unique charm and history. If you’re planning a trip to Kyoto and want to explore beyond the usual tourist spots, here’s a guide to some of the city’s hidden gems.

    1. Tōfuku-ji Temple

Tōfuku-ji is one of Kyoto’s oldest temples and is often overlooked by tourists. Founded in 1236, it is famous for its beautiful Zen gardens and impressive wooden structures. The temple is particularly known for its large wooden bridge, which offers a fantastic view of the surrounding gardens during the autumn season. The temple grounds are peaceful and provide a perfect setting for a quiet stroll.

    2. Kōyasan Daishūin Temple

Situated in the southern part of Kyoto, Kōyasan Daishūin Temple is a hidden treasure. This temple is a branch of the famous Kōyasan temple complex in Wakayama Prefecture. It’s known for its serene atmosphere and traditional architecture. The temple is also home to a beautiful garden that reflects the changing seasons, making it a lovely spot for those looking to escape the bustle of the city.

    3. Shinnyō-dō Temple

Shinnyō-dō is a small temple tucked away in the eastern part of Kyoto. It’s less crowded than other temples and is known for its lovely, well-maintained grounds. The temple is particularly enchanting during the cherry blossom season when the trees in the temple’s garden are in full bloom. The calm environment makes it an excellent place for quiet reflection.

    4. Eikandō Temple

Eikandō, officially named Eikan-dō Zenrin-ji, is famous for its beautiful autumn foliage. The temple is located in the foothills of Kyoto’s eastern mountains and features a unique collection of statues and art. One of the highlights is the temple’s “Amida Buddha,” which is said to have a very special appearance. The surrounding gardens are well worth a visit, especially when the leaves turn red in fall.

    5. Hōrin-ji Temple

Hōrin-ji is a hidden gem located in Kyoto’s northern district. This small temple offers a more intimate and personal experience compared to the larger, more touristy sites. Hōrin-ji is known for its tranquil atmosphere and lovely garden. It’s a great place to spend some quiet time away from the busy city streets.

    6. Kōbō-ji Temple

Often overshadowed by its more famous neighbors, Kōbō-ji Temple is a gem worth visiting. Located near the Philosopher’s Path, this temple is known for its beautiful, peaceful setting and traditional architecture. The temple’s small but charming garden provides a perfect backdrop for a relaxing visit.

    7. Ryoan-ji Temple

While Ryoan-ji is more known than some of the other hidden temples, it still often gets missed by many visitors. This temple is famous for its rock garden, which is a masterpiece of Zen design. The simplicity and calm of the garden make it a perfect place for meditation and quiet contemplation.

Tips for Visiting Kyoto’s Hidden Temples

    • Timing: Visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid crowds and enjoy a more peaceful experience.
    • Respect: Remember to be respectful when visiting temples. This means dressing modestly, speaking quietly, and following any rules posted at the site.
    • Transportation: Kyoto’s public transportation system is quite good, but some of these hidden temples might require a bit of extra effort to reach. Consider using a bike or taking a taxi for convenience.

Exploring Kyoto’s lesser-known temples provides a unique and enriching experience, allowing you to connect with the city’s history and culture in a more personal way. Each temple has its own story and beauty, waiting to be discovered by those who take the time to wander off the beaten path. So, if you’re planning a visit to Kyoto, make sure to include some of these hidden treasures in your itinerary.
